BMW and Toyota are apparently keen on expanding their newfound partnership. Word within the industry is that the next-generation Toyota Corolla could have BMW engines under the hood.
More specifically rumors have surfaced that Toyota is planning to utilize BMW engines on higher-end Corollas. This means the more mainstream Corolla models would most likely utilize Toyota’s 1.5-liter and 1.2-liter turbo four-cylinders.
Exactly which BMW engines Toyota would want to use is not entirely known. It’s likely a safe bet that the company would be interested in BMW’s 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four. The 2.0-liter is found in many BMW models and has been fairly well-received as a low-end V-6 replacement.
The new Corolla will be built on Toyota’s Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA), which means the new car will be lighter, safer and reportedly bigger than the outgoing model. Toyota’s next Corolla is slated to launch in 2018.
