After a few mysterious teasers, Lexus’ latest F Sport model has been revealed. The 2022 Lexus IS 500 F Sport will usher in the return of the V-8 engine to the IS sedan. Lexus’ latest features a 5.0-liter V-8 and some styling changes to yield the most aggressive IS yet.
There’s several details to unpack here, but the headliner is certainly what is under the hood. Lexus is slotting in its 5.0-liter V-8, a familiar mill to F models. In the IS 500 F Sport this engine will generate 472 horsepower and 395 pound-feet of torque. This power will flow through the same the same eight-speed Sport Direct Shift automatic transmission found in the IS 300 and IS 350 RWD models.
Lexus says the V-8 power will send this iteration of the IS from zero to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds. Meanwhile, Lexus says this beast will still yield 24 mph on the highway. Part of this efficiency is stemming from an interesting fact that the IS 500 is only only 143 pounds heavier than the IS 350 F Sport.
F Sport buyers will also appreciate a new quad-exhaust system that Lexus promises allows the V-8 roar to bellow. The exhaust system is inspired by full F models, such as the RC F.
The IS 500 will come standard with F Sport’s Dynamic Handling Package, which includes Adaptive Variable Suspension and a Torsen limited slip differential that improves handling and performance thanks to enhanced traction when cornering or exiting turns. The LSD helps maintain straight-line stability as well. Engineers have also improved the IS chassis performance with the addition of a Yamaha rear performance damper. Brake cooling enhancements have also been made over the standard F Sport with additional aerodynamic cooling and larger 14.0-inch two-piece aluminum front rotors and 12.7-inch rear rotors.
More Menacing Appearance
The IS 500 doesn’t just have more power. Lexus has also raised the hood nearly 2 inches and added sculpted center character lines, while the front bumper and fenders have been lengthened to help accommodate the additional cylinders. These subtle changes have created a more aggressive appearance versus the IS 350 F Sport.
IS 500 will come standard with exclusive 19-inch split-10-spoke Enkei alloy wheels. These wheels are also 1 pound lighter in the front and 2 pounds lighter in the rear versus the standard IS wheels. Other exterior updates include a revised lower rear diffuser accent that accentuates the quad exhaust system, as well as dark chrome window trim. A rear lip spoiler rounds out the F Sport uniqueness, while new black badging will become the norm on all F Sport cars.
Inside Lexus is keeping changes to the IS 500 F Sport interior minimal. Of course, there’s F Sport specific seats, steering wheel and sill plates borrowed from the IS 350 F Sport. The only unique bit to the IS 500 is the gauge cluster, which says IS 500 upon startup.
Thus far Lexus isn’t saying what the 2022 IS 500 F Sport will cost. The 2022 Lexus IS 500 F Sport is expected to launch this fall, expect pricing details shortly before fall.
