The current-generation Lexus ES isn’t that old, but Lexus is still updating its midsize sedan. For 2022 the ES is gaining some subtle updates to keep it fresh, including a massive new touchscreen.

By far the most important change is the pivot to a touchscreen infotainment system. Lexus has clung to its laptop-style touchpad interface far too long, but finally it is starting to disappear from the lineup. For 2022 Lexus has moved the screen 4.3-inches closer to the face of the dash panel. This move makes the screen more accessible to both the driver and front passenger since they actually have to touch it to use it.

The ES continues to offer a standard eight-inch screen and an optional 12.3-inch unit. While both are now touchable, Lexus has left its traditional touchpad on the center console for those few who still prefer it. Fortunately it is now optional as to whether or not you utilize it.

Outside the 2022 ES has seen some minor styling changes as well. There’s a new mesh pattern in the grille, featuring rotating “L” patterns. New bezels are found within the headlights, which are simply cleaner than the previous units. The exterior changes are rounded out with a slightly-redesigned rear bumper, but we have to squint to tell the difference there.

Lexus is also expanding the popular F-Sport trim level. For the first time buyers of the 2022 ES 300h hybrid will be able to opt for the F-Sport option.

Speaking of sport, 2022 ES buyers will also have a new Dynamic Handling package to choose from. This package includes electronically controlled dampers, a Sport+ drive mode and a parking assistance system. Lexus has also upgraded the 2022 ES to the latest iteration of its Lexus Safety System+, which now includes forward collision avoidance and a new Intersection Turning Assist system. Lexus notes the new LSS+ includes other enhancements as well.

The 2022 Lexus ES will arrive in Lexus showrooms this fall.
