Musk: Wheelbase Will Limit Tesla Model 3 Battery Capacity to Less than 100 kWh

Tesla chief executive Elon Musk has revealed via his Twitter account that the wheelbase of the upcoming Model 3 compact sedan will limit its battery capacity to less than 100 kWh.

Musk also indicated that while Tesla’s semi-trailer and possibly even its pickup truck will require increased battery capacities that there are no plans to provide a corresponding increase for its full-size Model S sedan or Model X crossover.

Musk’s comments follow his recent confirmation that 100D and P100D editions of the entry level sedan are not planned.

Expect additional details on the Model 3 to be available as the unit ramps up for production later this year.

I wonder what is the point where battery capacity ceases to be the main issue and the focus shifts to size and weight? My guess: 600 mile range per charge and a 'supercharger' top up to 80% in less than 10 minutes would make most of range anxiety go away. That's about a full days of driving for people with a 'top off' time that aligns with needed meal/bathroom breaks. For most commuting, you'd just be topping off in the evening. At that point, making batteries small/ligher cheaper will be more important.
