General Motors has not been shy about its upcoming GMC Hummer EV’s capabilities, including its crazy crab mode. However, the Hummer EV’s first-ever functionality will extend into infotainment as well. Today Epic Games announced the revived Hummer will leverage its Unreal Engine as the foundation for its infotainment system.
For those unfamiliar with the video game industry, variations of Epic’s Unreal Engine have been around for many years and power some very popular video games. If you’ve ever played Fortnite or many other popular titles, you’ve experienced the Unreal Engine. While the engine isn’t knew, this will be the first-ever application within a vehicle infotainment system.
Epic touts the Unreal Engine enables a very high degree of flexibility for designers to draft user interfaces, including 3D rendering capabilities. The platform will also enable faster boot times and the ability for GM to conduct over-the-air updates to the system, which Epic refers to as its digital cockpit offering.
Sadly Epic nor GM have shown any teasers of this new infotainment system. The Hummer EV pickup truck is slated for full reveal on Oct. 20th, so there’s no question additional details are around the corner.
