Subaru is recalling 48,500 Legacy and Outback models due to the potential for total steering failure. According to documents filed by Subaru with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, vehicles built between February 29, 2016 and May 6, 2016 may have an improperly machined steering column.
The defective column could cause a total failure of steering, according to the filings. As a remedy, Subaru will begin contacting owners of the impacted 2016-2017 Legacy and Outback models to inspect and replace (if necessary) the steering column.
The recall began May 13, 2016. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-800-782-2783
