Mitsubishi May Bring Back Eclipse Name...As An SUV

Mitsubishi released the above teaser of a new compact SUV the brand will reveal at the Geneva Motor Show in March. According to insiders, the SUV could wear the iconic Eclipse nameplate, which would be a rather dramatic departure from the front-wheel-drive coupe the name used to be found on.

Regardless of name, the new SUV is slated to slot between the Mitsubishi AX and Outlander in global markets. That means it is expected to compete with the likes of the Nissan Rogue Sport, Honda HR-V, Toyota CH-R and other cute utes in the now crowded segment.

What is immediately apparent from the above teaser is that the design theme is following that of the XR-PHEV II Concept Mitsubishi debuted at the Geneva show in 2015. That means there’s a coupe-like roofline and more dramatic sheetmetal than what we’re used to from Mitsubishi’s of the recent past.

So far there’s only speculation as to what will power the new Eclipse. The latest rumor is that it will have a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-four under the hood, versus the hybrid powertrain the concept had a couple years ago.

Expect more teasers on the new Eclipse between now and the Geneva Motor Show in March.

Sounds a lot better than "ASX" or "RVR" or "Outlander Sport".
That would be like Ford naming the NA EcoSport the Thunderbird. It's crazy that Mitsubishi is doing this.
I hate when automakers do this.

The name has probably been gone long enough that most people won't remember it - but Eclipse enthusiasts certainly won't be happy.
