Mercedes-Benz may be working on an eight-speed automatic transmission. At least, a U.S. trademark filing discovered by AutoGuide suggest the G-Tronic transmission line could be growing.
Simply put, Mercedes-Benz has filed for a trademark for “8 G-Tronic,” implying an eight-speed version of the G-Tronic transmission.
It is worth noting that Stuttgart already offers to versions of the G-Tronic transmission; both a seven-speed and nine-speed. While the seven-speed box is still utilized in a few products, the newer nine-speed has been quickly proliferating their product portfolio.
So far no one knows for sure which Mercedes product would get an eight-speed automatic. Our speculation would yield a new 8G-Tronic transmission for the company’s lineup of upcoming new compact vehicles, such as the A Class sedan and next-generation CLA and GLA vehicles. Right now these products are still using the seven-speed gearbox and could be prime candidates for an additional cog.
There’s also the chance this trademark filing is nothing more than Mercedes protecting others from using their naming scheme. Time will tell!
