Crossover all the things. At least that seems to be the running strategy at most automakers as buyer preferences shift to crossovers and SUVs. In this case, Kia is showing off its upcoming Stonic crossover in some official sketches it released in South Korea.

The Stonic is slated to be the brand’s competitor to the Nissan Juke (Kicks?) and Kia Soul. That said, what we have here is a sub-compact crossover with stylish angles and a generally muscular appearance. The youthful appearance is almost a prerequisite of success for this particular market segment.

Kia will leverage the upcoming Hyundai Kona as a basis for the Stonic, which provides further assurance of its sub-compact dimensions. Likewise, the Stonic is slated to share 1.4-liter and possibly 1.6-liter four-cylinders with the Kona as well.

Thus far Kia has not shown any photos or sketches of the interior. Kia did say regarding the interior, “European-designed cabin [that] echoes the appearance of the exterior, with straight lines, smooth surfaces and geometric design forms”.

Expect to see the official reveal of the Kia Stonic later this year.
