Chinese automaker Guangzhou Automobile Group Co. (GAC) has indicated that it plans to have an exhibit on the main floor at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in 2017. The state-run company intends to begin selling its vehicles in the U.S. in the coming years.

GAC last attended the Detroit show in 2015, debuting its self-driving Witstar hybrid concept and GS4 sport utility vehicle. The company partners partners with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Honda Motor Co. and Toyota Motor Corp. for sales and manufacturing ventures in China.

A delegation of GAC officials, including GAC Group Chairman Zhang Fangyou, recently met with FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne and Jeep brand manager Mike Manley at the FCA corporate headquarters in Auburn Hills, Michigan. GAC is reportedly looking to FCA for guidance in setting up its U.S. sales operations.

GAC and FCA currently co-produce the Jeep Renegade in Guangzhou and the Jeep Cherokee, Fiat Viaggio and Fiat Ottima in Changsha.
