Hyundai is reportedly working on two hybrid variants of its new Santa Fe crossover. The two new options are said to include a traditional hybrid and plug-in hybrid options.
News of the electrified versions come as little surprise. Hyundai is in the process of ramping up the number of electrified vehicles it offers, with crossover options behind the area of obvious growth. The company’s plans for the Santa Fe were confirmed to AutoCar during the new Santa Fe’s launch in Barcelona.
Thus far the company has not disclosed details on either variant. It is possible the plug-in variant will utilize the same powertrain as the Kia Optima PHEV, which utilizes a 2.0-liter engine. Aside from that setup, Hyundai does not have any obvious choices for the hybridized Santa Fe unless it has developed a new powertrain for it. The normal hybrid could also borrow components from the Kia Niro.
The exact timing of the Santa Fe hybrid variants isn’t yet known. It also isn’t known yet if all markets will get both variants.
