For its annual chase of Ford’s F-150 and now Dodge’s Ram, Chevrolet introduced the 2022 Silverado, which will offer a bit more than a new color palette or a changed grille.
Quite a bit more is on offer:
- A new exterior and a new expressive interior with enhanced tech
- A first-time Silverado ZR2 flagship model
- Super Cruise on the top-level High Country trim
- A high-output version of the 2.7L turbo four-cylinder
- A 3.0L Duramax inline six-cylinder turbo-diesel with 13,300-pound maximum towing
The ZR2 is Chevy’s new off-road truck and the latest addition to its factory-installed lifted trucks. Max payload on ZR2s is 1,440 pounds and the conventional trailer weight rating is 8,900 pounds. It’ll come with a 6.2L V-8 engine making 420 horsepower and 460 lbs-ft of torque, mated to a Hydra-Matic (10L80) 10-speed automatic transmission.
The Silverado’s first application of Multimatic 40mm DSSV spool-valve dampers with three separate spool valves to control damping and more.
All trims (LT, RST, LT Trail Boss, ZR2, LTZ and High Country) have been treated to a new interior with a sweeping, horizontal instrument panel that elicits a feeling of more space in the cab. There’s also a new, more fully functional center console, with available electronic shift control on most trims. Regular, double and crew cab models will be available.
The screen race continues with a 13.4-inch diagonal color touchscree and a new 12.3-inch diagonal configurable digital instrument cluster standard on most models.
A suite of Google apps and extensions that work with either Android or Apple CarPlay.
Underneath, there will be four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock, front and rear e-lockers plus a unique skid plate package.
The 2.7L four-cylinder retains its DOHC, 16 valves, VVT, direct injection and AFM (and yes, Stop/Start). On the plus side, the engine gains power, 310 hp and 420 lbs-ft or torque, compared to 310/348 last year and more torque than any base engine in its class, according to the Bowtie Boys. It has a 30% stiffer crankshaft.
The 3.0L Durmax straight six-cylinder motor with DOHC and 24 valves will put out 277 hp and 460 lbs-ft. In 2WD configuration, it will be able to tow 4,000 pounds more than last year.
