None of the Detroit Three automakers rest on their laurels long when it comes to pickups. The competitive nature of the half-ton and heavy duty truck segments simply doesn’t allow them to rest. A new rumor suggest GM isn’t resting right now when it comes to its HD truck lineup, which may see a power boost in 2023.

The Fast Lane Truck is reporting that GM is planning to give the Silverado HD’s 6.6-liter diesel V-8 an overhaul for 2023. This overhaul is said to include a significant power boost from the engine’s current 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque. In fact, the unnamed sources suggest the revised engine could be rated up to 505 horsepower and 1,085 pound-feet of torque. Such figures would keep the GM diesel in line with newer competitors. Ford’s latest 6.7-liter PowerStroke diesel generates 475 horsepower and 1,075 pound-feet of torque. The Ram’s 6.7-liter Cummins inline-six hammers out 420 horsepower and 1,075 pound feet of torque.

In addition to more power, the report suggests GM is going to update the Allison automatic transmission and rear differential to handle the increased torque. Both updates are pretty much a given considering the significant torque increase.

It’s unclear if GM is planning any additional upgrades to the 2023 heavy duty pickups. It’s likely they will see some minor styling changes, similar to the ones just revealed for the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500.
