Buick has confirmed plans to debut the 2020 Buick Encore in China on April 15th. The new crossover will bow at this year’s Shanghai Motor Show, where it is expected to share the stage with the all-new Encore GX.
This redesign will be a significant one for the Buick Encore. It will be transitioning to a new platform and will no longer be a rebadged version of the Opel Mokka since General Motors sold its European division two years ago. So expect a more Buick-like design theme resting atop a slightly larger footprint.
The slightly larger footprint is apparently leaving enough room for Buick to feel a need to launch a smaller iteration of the Encore it is calling Encore GX, which is also being teased on the right side of the above teaser issued by Buick China.
It isn’t clear yet if the Encore GX will also arrive stateside, but given the fact that Buick has trademarked the name in the United States, it does seems plausible it too will be in Buick dealerships in the U.S.
Details of the two models have not trickled out yet, but expect new powertrains for the Encore that are mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. While an electrified variant isn’t expected at launch, one is expected sometime during the new Encore’s lifespan.
