Mercedes Diesels May Have Cheated in U.S. Emission Tests

A German newspaper is reporting evidence that suggests Mercedes manufacturer Daimler cheated on U.S. emissions tests with its diesel engines. The report cites confidential documents held by U.S regulators at the Department of Justice.*

Bild am Sonntag*reports U.S. investigators uncovered evidence suggesting Mercedes diesel vehicles featured software that altered the emissions system behavior. One piece of software allegedly switched of emissions cleaning after 26 kilometers, allowing the vehicle to showcase normal emission behavior during regulatory testing. A second software element allowed the emission system to recognize whether the car was being tested based on speed or acceleration patterns.*

Similar software was found on over 580,000 Volkswagen vehicles back in 2015, when the company was caught and admitted to cheating on the diesel emissions of its vehicles globally. Since the Volkswagen scandal, regulators both in the U.S. and Europe have placed intense scrutiny on other automakers' diesel engines, including Mercedes.*

Thus far Daimler has declined to comment on the pending investigation, noting that the Department of Justice has not yet filed a complaint against the automaker despite the German newspaper report.*

Back in May Mercedes dropped attempts to seek regulatory approval for its 2017 model year diesel vehicles in the U.S. At the time the company declined to explain the reasoning for dropping its emission approval attempt.*

Mercedes also issued a recall of over three million diesel vehicles in Europe back in July. Details of the recall were never disclosed by parent company Daimler, citing only that the "fix" would lower*nitrous oxide emissions from the engines.*
