Jaguar Enters Hot Compact SUV Segment With 2018 E-Pace

There's no question Jaguar is serious about expanding its lineup. After launching its first-ever SUV with the F-Pace, the company has decided to enter the hot compact segment with the 2018 E-Pace. The new E-Pace will be rolling out at a time with buyers are flocking to small SUVs, and it's sporting Jaguar good looks and plenty of goods to appease said buyers.

As noted with the F-Pace, Jaguar's brand design theme is clearly inspired by the F-Type. The inspiration from the brand's flagship is rather obvious with the new E-Pace as well, with an assertive design that looks uniquely Jaguar. That said, it isn't a mini F-Pace from a visual perspective; it has its own character throughout the body lines.

Inside is a similar story in terms of the E-Pace's homage to the rest of the Jaguar portfolio. There is a general "cockpit" type design theme with the dash, similar to that of the brand's other products. This interior design seems to be slightly less dynamic than, say, the much higher priced F-Type, but still attractive. Jaguar is claiming premium materials throughout the cabin, with a highlight on a 10-inch touchscreen featuring Jaguar's Touch Pro infotainment system. A 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster is optional, as is head-up display.

Those enjoying the cabin of the E-Pace will be propelled by a choice of two variants of the new Ingenium turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four. In base form the engine will produce 246 horsepower, while R-DYNAMIC models increase the horsepower figure to 296 horsepower to match its more aggressive exterior design treatment. Both engines are exclusively mated to a ZF nine-speed automatic transmission.

All new E-Pace models come standard with all-wheel-drive. The AWD system is permanent with the ability to send nearly all of the engine's torque to either the front or rear axle, depending on conditions. Models with the 296 horsepower engine also gain Active Driveline. Active Driveline also adds twin clutches to the driveline so that the AWD system can completely disengage when not needed. All E-Pace models feature a suspension system similar in geometry to the F-Pace and torque-vectoring.
Of course, the new E-Pace is bookended with a long list of available features. The feature list includes everything from 4G LTE WiFi to a host of active safety features.

Jaguar has already announced the starting price on the E-Pace, which rests at $39,595. It is worth noting that the price will climb well in excess of $60,000 when fully-decked, but that's not out of line from its German competitors.

I'd be hard pressed not to buy this over the competitive set. Very attractive proposition for the segment.
