Subaru Ascends Into Big SUV Territory

Subaru is officially rejoining the three-row SUV space next year with the 2018 Subaru Ascent. The brand revealed a thinly disguised version of the SUV today at the New York Auto Show.

This isn't the first time we've seen this vehicle. Subaru first played its hand with the Viziv-7 Concept it showed off last year. Technically today's reveal is still a concept, but this one is obviously closer to being production ready.

Based on a longer wheelbase variant of Subaru's universal architecture, the Ascent will comfortably seat seven passengers. This is the first Subaru to out-grow the Outback wagon since the Tribeca was discontinued in 2014.

Since today's reveal was not of the production Ascent, details are still scarce. What we do know is that it will be powered by an all-new 2.4-liter turbocharged engine. Power output and transmission selection is anyone's guess at this point.

We we also know the Ascent will be produced at Subaru's assembly plant in Indiana when it goes on sale next year.

If Subaru ever consistently delivered nicely-styled vehicles, imagine what their growth would be like! This looks like someone used the current Nissan Rogue as the basis for an 'everycar' for an insurance commercial or something.

The fenders are a bit much.

So much better looking than the van-like Honda Pilot, though.

It looks like they took design elements from about three or four different vehicles, stirred the pot and this came out.

The spy shots don't really look like this which makes me wonder.
