Mitsubishi has taken the wraps off the 2018 Eclipse Cross crossover ahead of next week's slated reveal. The new crossover that features a throwback name will slot into the hot sub-compact crossover segment, competing with the likes of the Nissan Rogue Sport.

Back when most of us were kids the Mitsubishi Eclipse was a popular coupe. However, Mitsubishi is basically done with coupes and sedans in today's world as everyone wants a crossover or SUV. As such, the nameplate is returning on this and throwing the word "Cross" behind it. That said, the Eclipse Cross is sort of coupe-ish in appearance with such a steep roofline and radical looking C-pillar.

Complete details of the Eclipse Cross will finally arrive next week, but for now we do have some specifications of the U.S. bound version. In North America the Eclipse Cross will be powered exclusively by a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, mated to a CVT automatic. The specifications of said engine are still unknown at this time.

The Eclipse Cross will arrive in U.S. dealerships

Ugh. So it's not even a performance oriented CUV? The only thing that might redeem this is a proper Evo version that offers Macan performance at a reasonable price. Do that and maybe the Eclipse name won't seem so dumb.

Name aside, I like it. Mitsubishi needs bold vehicles like this to create some identity for the brand again. This will definitely turn heads.

It may be, but they're hitting at the heart of a new crossover-dominated market with this.

Personally, I don't see it as any worse that any of the latest "Transformers" from Honda/ Acura or Toyota/Lexus.
