Ford announced today that the 2017 Fusion Energi will offer a combined range of 610 miles when travelling on a full tank of gas and battery charge. The range is an increase of 60 miles over the 550 miles provided by the 2016 model and places the Fusion Energi first among plug-in hybrids.

Ford attributes the gain in range to modifications made to the powertrain software and regenerative braking, a technology which recycles energy to the battery when drivers apply the brakes.

The 2017 Fusion Energi is able to travel the first 21 miles solely on power provided by a 7.6-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery, followed by an additional 588 miles using a 2.0-liter I-4 Atkinson-cycle gasoline engine. When running on electric power the vehicle’s top speed remains at 85 mph.

EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings for the 2017 Fusion Energi are 43 mpg city, 41 mpg highway and 42 mpg combined.

The 2017 Fusion Energi is available now.
