Ram 1500 EcoDiesel Returns for 2020

For some time Ram was the only half-ton pickup in the U.S. that offered a diesel engine option, but that option went away after parent Fiat Chrysler Automobiles was accused of cheating on diesel emissions. However, those matters have been resolved so the diesel is finally in the redesigned Ram 1500.

Ram announced yesterday a redesigned version of the company’s 3.0-liter diesel V-6 will be available for 2020, the first time the diesel has been slotted into the redesigned Ram that launched in the 2019 model year. The revamped diesel has gotten a power boost, now rated at 260 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque thanks to a new water-cooled Variable Geometry Turbocharger.

The previous iteration of this engine was rated at 240 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque.

Ram is also making the bold claim that the 2020 Ram EcoDiesel is the “most powerful half-ton diesel” on the market. That statement may be up for debate. During Ram’s absence from the diesel market rivals Ford and GM both launched diesel half-tons.

GM’s new 3.0-liter inline-six diesel is rated at 277 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, meaning it has more horsepower but falls short of the Ram in terms of torque. While GM and Ram will likely fight it out who reigns supreme, Ford is the clear third-place in this battle. F-150’s equipped with its optional 3.0-liter PowerStroke V-6 offer 250 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque.

Thus far Ram isn’t talking about fuel economy or pricing for the revived diesel engine. Prospective buyers will be able to grab a new Ram EcoDiesel in the last quarter of this year, when the engine will be optional on all trim levels.
