Those aspiring for a Jeep Gladiator pickup with decent fuel economy are now in luck. For 2021 Jeep is slotting in its well-known 3.0-liter EcoDiesel engine, borrowing from the strategy it’s deployed with the JL Wrangler.
Much like we’ve noted with the Wrangler diesel, the Gladiator is seeing a noteworthy jump increase in fuel economy thanks to this oil-burner option. More specifically, Gladiator buyers willing to fork over the extra cash for the diesel will see a 25-percent increase in gas mileage over the V-6 gas engine found in the 2020 Gladiator.
According to the EPA the Gladiator diesel will be rated at 24 mpg combined, netting out to 22 mpg city and 28 mpg highway ratings. For those keeping tabs, the the Gladiator V-6 is rated at 17/22 when equipped with its automatic transmission, the only gear selector option with the EcoDiesel.
Much like the Wrangler, opting for the EcoDiesel and the off-road friendly Rubicon trim level will result in a slight reduction in fuel economy. In Gladiator’s case, the EPA ratings will dip by 1 mpg in both city and highway cycles to 21/27 mpg. The reduction is the result of more aggressive gearing and meatier tires that come standard on Rubicon.
With its newly-minted EPA ratings, the Gladiator diesel is officially the most fuel-efficient diesel midsize pickup on the market; besting the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon. The GM twins are rated at 19 mpg city and 28 mpg highway.
Regardless of the fuel economy difference, the GM twins offer significantly less power at 186 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, while the Jeep carries the torch with 260 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque.
