Sources indicate that Apple recruited the technical director of Porsche’s racing program earlier this year to work on its Project Titan car development initiative.
The news was initially reported in the Germany monthly circular Manager Magazin and has since been confirmed by a company insider.
Alexander Hitzinger was responsible for putting together the development team and organizational structure for Porsche’s endurance racing program. Under Hitzinger’s direction, the 919 hybrid sports car was engineered from the ground up and used largely unproven technology to capture LeMans and the endurance racing world championship in both 2015 and 2016.
Manager Magazin indicates that Hitzinger has not responded to the report but quotes him stating that he wished to contribute to a project “which has a significant and direct impact on society.”
Hitzinger’s LinkedIn profile acknowledges that he left Porsche this spring and is now working for a San Francisco-based “Technology Company.”
