The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced on Wednesday that it has opened an investigation into a July 1 accident in Pennsylvania “to determine whether automated functions were in use at the time of the crash.”

Tesla Motors Inc immediately responded to the announcement with a brief statement, indicating that “based on the information we have now, we have no reason to believe that Autopilot had anything to do with this accident.”

The NHTSA indicated that it is in the process of collecting information from the state police, the manufacturer and the driver.
