Amazon Alexa Coming to Toyota Vehicles

Toyota has announced plans to bring the Amazon Alexa virtual assistant to some of its Lexus and Toyota models later this year. The announcement, made at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, marks a significant step forward for the Japanese automaker.

Thus far Toyota has been one of few automakers to resist bringing bit tech companies to its vehicle interiors. The company still does not offer Apple CarPlay or Android Auto integration to its touchscreens, despite nearly every other major automaker already offering it.

Toyota says its Alexa integration will allow for voice control of vehicle functions, such as climate control, while still offering Alexa’s full suite of voice control options. For example, if a Toyota customer has a thermostat in their home that can be controlled with Alexa, they will still be able to control it with their voice in the car.

Toyota isn’t the first automaker to announce plans to integrate Amazon Alexa. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Nissan, Daimler, Ford and BMW have all already announced some form of integration of Alexa.

The company has not detailed which products will gain Alexa voice control first.
