Today Ford Motor Company confirmed the 2018 Ford Expedition will offer the ability to stream live TV. It is all part of the Ford’s push to make the new Expedition the perfect family hauler, and families typically require some form of entertainment.
Instead of offering the traditional dual headrest screens that can play old school DVD players, Ford is embedding the Sling Media app in the car. For the first time ever in an automobile, Expedition owners will be able to stream their cable TV or satellite service from their home to their Expedition via Sling Media and a Slingbox inside their home.
There are some caveats here. One cannot just magically stream their TV service to the Expedition. Owners must also have a Slingbox inside their house, which connect to their cable box or satellite receiver and broadcasts their pay TV service over the internet.
The Sling Media app in the Expedition will stream over the Expedition’s embedded 4G LTE WiFi system. Ford says the WiFi hotspot in the Expedition can handle up to 10 devices simultaneously and will work within a 50-foot radius of the vehicle.
In the same release, Ford is confirming that the upcoming EcoSport crossover will not offer a physical CD player. Ford justifies their position by citing recent research that shows continued decline of CD sales and that younger buyers simply don’t care about having a CD player. Color us shocked.
