Subaru To Update WRX Prior To Redesign

The 2018 Subaru WRX will be based on the last-generation Impreza instead of the new one. This news tempers expectations that the company would roll out an all-new WRX based on the new Impreza with a hybrid powertrain.

Confirmation of the refreshed WRX actually came from an anonymous Subaru engineer commenting on Motoring’s website. Albeit a bit of an odd occurrence, said engineer was awfully keen at tempering expectations associated with the WRX.

“The WRX will have a facelift soon, not a full model cycle, because the new model just launched in 2015,” the source said, adding “that’s only last year.”

The engineer went on to post that Subaru would love to launch a new WRX on the company’s SGP modular platform that underpins the new Impreza, but the model cycle is not timing up for that. It sounds like the WRX will solider on with the current platform for at least another two or three years.

It’s unclear what changes the company will include in the 2018 WRX. It’s likely to be a facelift of the exterior design and some other tweaks.
