Surging truck sales led Ford, Nissan and Toyota to post sales increases in October. The results yield a similar picture to that of September, which was the best sales month of 2017 for the industry as a whole.

Not all automakers have seen sales increases during October, though. GM and FCA both saw sales fall for varying reasons. Company specific results are below.

Ford Motor Company

Ford saw volume increase by 6.4 percent in October. The gain is largely credited to the Ford brand’s truck, crossover and SUV sales. The Ford brand saw a sales increase of 6.8 percent, while sales volume at the Lincoln brand declined by 1.8 percent.

Ford says retail sales were up 3.5 percent, while fleet sales were up 15 percent.


FCA continues to reduce reliance on fleet sales, which aided in the company posting a 13 percent sales decline in October. Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram and Fiat brands all posted declines for the month, while FCA reduced fleet by 43 percent.


GM total results show a sales decline of 2.2 percent. The drop was largely driven by a 3.4 percent decrease at the Chevrolet brand. The Buick and Cadillac brands also dropped, while GMC was the only GM brand in the black with a 4.6 percent increase.


Honda saw a modest 0.9 percent sales increase in October, which was led by strong demand for its car lineup with the redesigned Accord and Civic both posting gains. While nearly every other automaker saw truck volumes increase, Honda’s decreased.


Nissan set an October record with sales climbing 8.4 percent in October. The strong showing was led by demand for its truck and SUV models within the Nissan brand, which saw an increase of 10 percent. The gain at Nissan brand offset a 8.1 percent decline at Infiniti.


Large gains with Toyota truck and SUV models helped propel Toyota Motor Corporation to post a 1.1 percent sales gain for October. Toyota brand sales were up 2.5 percent, but the company’s Lexus fell 7.7 percent.
