Mercedes-Maybach is cooking up a new ultra-luxury SUV, which is slated to be revealed later this month at the Guangzhou auto show in China, reports Motor Authority.
Mercedes has been teasing the concept of a Maybach SUV for some time now, starting with the Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury Concept. Spy shots have shown the alleged Mercedes-Maybach SUV as an ultra-luxury version of the new GLS Class, similar to how Maybach’s sedan is a fancied-up version of the S Class.
Much like the relationship between the S Class and Maybach S Class, the biggest variance between the GLS and Maybach variant will be the price tag. The Maybach SUV is rumored to start around $200,000; a sizable jump up from the GLS Class’ base price of around $76,000.
The hefty price tag will yield buyers a unique exterior appearance, but also a substantially posher interior. We also expect Mercedes-Maybach to focus heavily on the rear seats of the new SUV; likely swapping out the bench seat in favor of extremely nice captain chairs.
Power is expected to be shared with the GLE 580, which has a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 that generates 483 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque thanks to a mild hybrid system. There’s rumors of an upcoming GLS 680 model with even more power and a plug-in hybrid system, which could also find its way into the Maybach model.
