Mercedes-Benz Evaluating Potential for X-Class Mid-Sized Pickup in North America

Daimler’s Mercedes-Benz Vans division is reportedly assessing the demand for mid-size pickup trucks in the United States to determine whether it will introduce its X-Class model to the market.

On Friday, divisional head Volker Mornhinweg indicated that burgeoning sales of mid-sized trucks was encouraging and that the Stuttgart-based automaker was monitoring developments and would make a decision on positioning “at the appropriate time.”

When prompted as to where Mercedes could build pickups for the North American market, Mornhinweg said that a new site in the United States would likely be necessary as manufacturing facilities in Argentina would not have the capacity to supply the market.

While Mercedes has announced that it will sell the X-Class in Europe, Latin America, South America and Africa, it has maintained that demand in the North American market may be limited due to a consumer preference for full-sized trucks.

If nothing else, Daimler seems to be doing an excellent job of maintaining speculation. Maybe they should just steal a page from Tesla's playbook and take pre-orders.

    To me this seems like a no-brainer. Sort of the approach Honda had with the original Ridgeline: a truck for Mercedes-Benz owners.
