According to an announcement in his blog, the former head of Google’s search division has joined Uber to contribute to the ride-hailing company’s self-driving car effort.

Amit Singhal, formerly a senior vice president and software engineer at Alphabet Inc. will assume the post of senior vice president of engineering at Uber, working closely with chief executive Travis Kalanic and Anthony Levandowski, who oversees the company’s autonomous vehicle program.

A native of India and a graduate of Cornell University, Singhal joined Google in 2000 and was responsible for overseeing Google’s search engine page ranking algorithm. Named a “Google Fellow” in 2001, Singhal remained with the tech giant until February, 2016 at which time he left the company to pursue philanthropic efforts.

Singhal joins Uber at a time in which the company has announced its intention to relocate one of its autonomous test fleets to Arizona. In December, California regulators claimed that Uber had not secured the proper permits to conduct autonomous vehicle testing in the state.
