The Wall Street Journal is reporting that longtime Apple senior executive Bob Mansfield has been appointed to lead “Project Titan,” the code name given to the company’s secret automotive project.

After stepping back from a day-to-day role in 2013, Mansfied continued to contribute to special projects like the Apple Watch. With Apple since 1999, Mansfield was also responsible for leading the hardware engineering for several of the company’s most prominent products, including the iMac, iPad and MacBook Air.

According to anonymous sources cited by the Wall Street Journal, senior managers involved in Project Titan are now reporting directly to Mansfield.

While Apple has hired a number of prominent players from the automotive industry in the past few years it has yet to confirm that it is working on a vehicle of its own.
