The redesigned 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe showed its face a few weeks ago, but the reveal was absent of many details. Well, Hyundai has remedied that by revealing more details about the updated Santa Fe, including its all-new engine lineup that includes a hybrid variant.
Santa Fe’s gas-only engine lineup is getting simplified with a singular displacement. Base models will utilize a new 2.5-liter inline-four that generates 191 horsepower and 182 pound-feet of torque, a slight boost in power over today’s 2.4-liter. The same 2.5-liter can be had with a turbocharged bolted on it for higher-end trim levels that generates an impressive 277 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque.
Hyundai has bolted a normal eight-speed automatic to the base engine, while the peppy turbo model gets a dual-clutch eight-speed transmission.
Both 2.5-liter engines are expected to see modest increases of 1 or 2 mpg in certain configurations over today’s Santa Fe, but official EPA fuel economy ratings have not been announced.
Another headliner of the 2021 Santa Fe is a new hybrid model. For this one Hyundai has combined a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder with a 17 horsepower starter motor and 59 horsepower electric drive motor. The combined output is 225 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque that flows through a six-speed automatic and standard all-wheel-drive.
Sadly, Hyundai has not yet disclosed fuel economy estimates for the Santa Fe Hybrid just yet. They have, though, confirmed plans to release a plug-in hybrid next year.
Rounding out the updates to the Santa Fe are some additional features and functionality. Many of the active safety features have been updated, including the adaptive cruise control having the ability to slow down on turns. The infotainment system has also been updated with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality, which will reside on a new, larger display that lives in a redesigned center stack.
Santa Fe buyers who want all the features and luxuries such as Nappa leather and a faux suede headliner can now opt for the new top-tier Calligraphy trim level. This model will be exclusive with the turbo 2.5-liter and all-wheel-drive and feature a unique exterior appearance.
