General Motors nearly broke the internet yesterday by revealing a revived Hummer vehicle. According to the automaker the 2022 Hummer EV Edition 1 sold out in about 10 minutes following its public, virtual reveal.
In addition to selling out at break-neck pace, GM also told media today that the Hummer EV was among the most-searched terms on Google yesterday. Both data points certainly suggest enthusiasm for the silent Hummer is certainly on the high side.
What GM isn’t disclosing is how many of the $112,595 Edition 1’s the company plans to produce. GM has been quoted as saying it plans to build “thousands” of the 2022 model-year Edition 1, but that’s a very generic figure. Given the bulk of the Hummer EV trim levels are not arriving until 2023, it may be a safe assumption that the “thousands” figure is on the low-end.
While there’s a significant buzz around the GMC Hummer EV, a key challenge for GM will be sustaining the excitement during what is a very drawn out vehicle launch. The lucky Edition 1 customers will start taking delivery next fall, but the next launch–the three-motor EV3X–isn’t slated for a year later. GMC will then launch a subsequently cheaper trim level in 2023 and again in 2024. Yeah, the $80,000 version is still over three years away.
