The 2020 Chevrolet C8 Corvette isn’t even at dealerships yet, but rumors already swirling regarding future iterations of the car. Namely, rumors of that a C8 Z06 could bring more than 800 horsepower to the Corvette’s mid-engine chassis.
The folks over at Automobile are citing unnamed sources that suggest a long-rumored twin-turbocharged V-8 engine will ultimately find its way into the Corvette C8 Z06. The engine is expected to be based on Cadillac’s DOHC Blackwing V-8, but will likely carry the LT7 moniker instead. This engine is rumored to be 5.5-liters and churn out at least 800 horsepower and a torque level in-excess of 700 pound-feet. While those are some insane numbers, they’re actually realistic given the Blackwing’s current power ratings.
Which transmission this beastly Z06 will leverage is still not entirely clear. One option would be the Tremec seven-speed dual-clutch unit found in the regular C8, but some sources are suggesting GM will have a 10-speed dual-clutch unit ready by the time the Z06 launches.
A host of other hardware enhancements are also expected, such as upgraded suspension and wider tires.
Speaking of launch, the exact timing of the Z06’s launch is not 100-percent clear, but most sources point to it launching in 2021 as a 2022 model. Perhaps the best part of this story is that the C8 story is not expected to stop with the Z06; there’s still talk of a ZR1 model later.
