Buick officially teased its China-only Velite 5 car last week, but not the rest of the car has leaked by way of Car News China. As expected, the Velite 5 is simply a Chevrolet Volt with Buick badging.
Basically Buick has changed the front and rear fascias on the Volt for Buick duty here. Aside from that and unique wheels, there isn’t much to report here. It also appears the headlights and taillights have been swapped out with more detailed units for the Buick version.
The bigger story with this car is that the Velite 5 will be produced in China by Shanghai-GM. Local production will enable the car to actually be competitive from a price perspective, unlike GM’s last attempt to sell the Volt in China.
GM originally imported the Chevrolet Volt to China from North America. During that period the company only sold a handful of Volts, largely because the price was way too high due to Chinese tariffs imposed on imported vehicles.
There is speculation that the “5” in the Velite 5’s name suggests there will be additional variants of the Velite in the future. In a recent release, Buick China did confirm plans for additional plug-in and battery electric vehicles, so perhaps the Velite name will become more common in the future.
