Buick is a big deal in China. The brand is leveraging the upcoming Beijing auto show as a venue to show off the Enspire Concept. This new concept is not just another electric crossover, but one packing a claimed 550 horsepower and zero to 60 mph in just 4.0 seconds.
Buick already offers a rebadged Chevrolet Volt as an alternative energy vehicle in China, but the Enspire is hardly a rebadge of the Chevrolet Bolt EV. Unlike the Bolt EV’s 150 kW electric motor (roughly 200 horsepower), the Enspire is packing over double that with a 410 kW motor, which GM claims is equivalent to 550 horsepower.
The Enspire is not just about performance though. Buick claims the crossover can last 370 miles on a charge. It also offers fast-charging, but Buick is not detailing how or what type of fast-charge the Enspire is packing.
While the bones of this crossover are interesting, the skin is even more interesting. Enspire is sporting a new, unique look for the Buick brand with a bold new face that is sort of an evolved take on the Buick Enclave front clip. One can squint and see additional cues borrowed from previous Buick concept vehicles, such as the horizontal lamp treatment, which is similar to the stunning Avista Concept from a few years ago.
Buick isn’t saying at this point if the Enspire will be produced, but our best guess is that a production variant will find its way to market. The only question is rather or not it will arrive stateside or just in China, where Buick is committed to offering more electric vehicles to meet increasingly strict emissions standards.
