Rivian Vehicles Will be Able to Charge Each Other

Rivian appears to be the new darling, startup electric automaker. The company has already confirmed plans to rollout a battery-electric truck and SUV, marketing them as adventure-ready vehicles that can go where no other current batter-electric vehicle can go.*

Of course, going where no other EV can go means there's likely no charging infrastructure at your destination. In a recent interview with*The Drive*Rivian CEO*RJ Scaringe confirmed a couple ancillary charging methods that will be unique to Rivian vehicles.*

Once such method is vehicle-to-vehicle charging. So let's say you and a fellow Rivian owner are both crawling off-road and you find yourself needing some electrons. Assuming you can make friends with the other Rivian owner, they can offer you some juice to get back home. It's an innovative concept not currently found on other EV's.*

Scaringe also confirmed Rivian will offer auxiliary battery packs to owners that find themselves needing addition electrons.*

Despite the buffet of charging options, Rivian already has a very large 180-kWh battery pack slotted within its "skateboard" chassis. Rivian says the pack will be good for up to 400 miles, which Scaringe says should translate to an EPA rating reality thanks to the company's intense focus on driving efficiency from its components.*

It is worth noting many battery-electric vehicles have falling short of expectations once range-tested through the EPA's drive cycle.*

Thus far Rivian is expected to have both its R1T pickup and R1S on the market by the end of 2020.*

Well they already have portable backup battery packs for cell phones and jump boxes for ICE vehicles, only a matter of time before they can make some portable charging solutions for EVs.
