    Polestar 2 Electric Fastback Revealed

Back in 2017 the Polestar brand announced it was becoming its own with the launch of the Polestar 1, a plug-in hybrid with 600 horsepower and 737 pound-feet of torque. Now the brand is aiming a little more mainstream with the reveal of the Polestar 2, a battery-electric car with an estimated 275 miles of range.*

While Polestar is its own brand now, it is still sharing a lot with parent company Volvo. In the Polestar 2's case, its sharing Volvo's Compact Modular Architecture that underpins a few Volvo products, such as the XC40. The sharing does not stop at the platform, though.*

Just a quick glance at the Polestar 2 makes it clear Volvo is its parent brand. The overall design theme--attractive as it is--follows Volvo's overall design theme. There's design cues such as the Thor's hammer headlight trait and taillight design that looks similar to Volvo with this fastback design.

Resting underneath this design is a 78-kWh battery pack that resides within the floor of the car. This will provide a low center of gravity for a car that is expected to be performance oriented, but also supply juice to an electric motor that will generate 408 horsepower and 487 pound-feet of torque. Polestar says it expects the 2 to have an EPA rating of 275 miles of range, but that is still pending testing.*

All Polestar products are expected to be fun to drive, but Polestar says it will offer performance add-ons to the 2. Among the add-ons:*O?hlins dampers, Brembo brakes, 20-inch forged wheels and sport tires, as well as gold seat belts, brake calipers and valve stem caps.

"Polestar 2 is our first fully*electric car*and first volume model. Everything about it has been designed and engineered with passion and dedication," said Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath. "As an electric performance brand, and through the forthcoming launch of a portfolio of fully electric cars, Polestar is determined to address the world's air quality challenges. Polestar delivers electric performance cars that are great to own and drive."

Polestar says the 2 will be around $63,000 for the launch edition model. The car will first go on sale in the*U.S.,*Canada, China, the U.K., Belgium, Germany, Holland, Norway and Sweden.*

Wow, 737 ft-lbs. That has to be one hell of a ride. This is the part of EVs that really excites me. I hope the mindless, soulless pods are several lifetimes away.

It's a wee bit blocky - reminds me of the Subaru Outback sedan or the old Eagle sedan. Given how flowing almost all the other Volvo and Polestars are, it seems a bit odd for the market. IIRC, @arutherford is right -- this is basically the Volvo concept that was supposed to preview the S40. Based on design and at similar money, I'd probably take the Model3 over this. Maybe it'll grow on me ...
