Tesla Model 3 Now Tops $85,000

Once dubbed the 'affordable' Tesla, the Model 3 sedan will now top out over $85,000 with a new performance model. Details of the dual-motor version of the car were revealed by CEO Elon Musk by tweet over the weekend.

According to Musk, the dual-motor version of the Model 3 will offer a 310-mile range and manage a zero to 50 time of about 3.5 seconds. In typical Musk fashion, the executive claimed the car will the beat all competitors at the track and offer better handling in the process. This beastly version of the car will start at $78,000; just a touch higher than the car's original $35,000 price tag. The base price does not include Tesla's Autopilot feature.*

The beefier version of the Model 3 will go on sale in July, assuming the company does not delay the car's launch any further.*Tesla has been promising a dual-motor version of its latest product for several months now. The dual-motor layout enables all-wheel-drive, a popular option on the company's Model S and Model X products.

Ironically, part of the hype that made the Model 3 a big deal and led to hundreds of thousands of pre-orders is still not on the market. The promised $35,000 version of the car--with a 'standard' battery pack--is still not in production.

Is that supposed to be 0-60? If not why 0-50 time?

Based on what I've read elsewhere, I think it is a typo and should be a 0-60 time. I am old enough to remember the malaise era, when cars got slow enough (and the US speed limit was 55 mph) that manufacturers started quoting 0-50 times! Glad we're not going back to that!!

Yea I wasn't around then but I remember reading articles about that and I just wasn't sure if EVs were being measured in 0-50 times for some other reason.

For more #s see this CNET article. 3.5 to 60 is the performance version of the dual motor variant and will offer 310 miles of range.
