2019 Lexus ES Revealed With Sportier Look, More Tech

As expected, the 2019 Lexus ES has bowed at this year's Beijing auto show. The sixth-generation of one of Lexus' best-sellers is packing a sportier new look built atop a larger platform, likely with the mission of indirectly replacing the aging GS.*

Lexus has switched the new ES to Toyota's TNGA architecture. This switch has enabled the ES to grow*is 2.6 inches longer and 1.8 inches wider than the outgoing model. While ES buyers are likely to appreciated the added space, Lexus likely opted for a larger ES with the intention of it indirectly replacing the current GS, which apparently has no immediate replacement.*

Despite the bigger dimensions, the new sedan looks a lot sleeker than today's model. Borrowing many design cues from the larger LS, the new ES looks slightly more youthful than the ES has in the past. It's also offering an F-Sport trim level for the first time ever, giving the ES a sporty appearance that is certainly unfamiliar.*

What is familiar with the new ES is what is found under the hood. The ES 350 will still be powered by Toyota's 3.5-liter V-6, but the power rating has been bumped to match Camry's 302 horsepower. Toyota has also swapped out the ES' six-speed automatic for a new eight-speed unit.*

The ES 300h hybrid model is also returning. This one too will be powered by*a 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle inline-four and electric motor. The combined power output is 215 horsepower, up 15 horsepower from today's ES 300h. Lexus is also expecting combined fuel economy to be 44 mpg, up from 40 mpg.*

Found inside the redesigned ES cabin is a host of new technology, centered on a new eight-inch resting in the dash, which can be swapped out for a massive 12.3-inch unit. The screen will house support for Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa integration. Lexus is also offering head-up display and in-car WiFi in the new ES.*

Thus far the only remaining piece of information on the 2019 Lexus ES is the price tag. Lexus says pricing will be announced closer to the sedan's launch, which is slated for September of this year.*

    Camry-ish is more accurate.
