Tesla is reportedly targeting November 2019 to begin producing its upcoming Model Y SUV. Of course, Tesla's track record when it comes to meeting production targets is marginal at best, but nonetheless the company is beginning to source suppliers for the Model Y.*

Reuters*has learned through sources Tesla has began communicating with suppliers for the Model Y, though details provided to them have been scarce thus far. The Model Y is slated to be the SUV counterpart to the Model 3 sedan, which is still in the process of ramping up after numerous production delays.*

The sources state the company is aiming for November of next year to begin sending Model Y's down the assembly line at its Fremont, California assembly plant. Subsequently, the electric carmaker is planning to commence Model Y production two years later at a planned Chinese assembly plant.*

Sources have also stated Tesla's 'request for information' to suppliers indicated annual production volumes of about 500,000 Model Y's in the United States. Estimated volumes for China were described as much lower, in the tens of thousands annually.*

Tesla has previously stated its Fremont facility can produce up to 10,000 vehicles per week. The company is also in the process of building out its Gigafactory battery plant in Nevada, which has been a primary source of delays for the Model 3.*
