Lincoln Aviator Will Look Like Concept

Lincoln dropped some jaws this week with the reveal of the Aviator Preview; Lincoln's term for this concept version of its upcoming new SUV. However, despite the "preview" nature, Lincoln executives say this week's show-stopper is basically the real-deal.*

While speaking with*Road & Track*incoming Lincoln boss David Woodhouse confirmed this week's "preview" is basically the production version of the 2020 Aviator, down to the plug-in hybrid powertrain under the hood.*

Expect a few minor changes between what we've seen this week and what will be in showrooms. The side mirrors on the preview appear to be far more stylish than what would be functional on a vehicle that drives on actual streets. The wheels and other minor pieces will probably evolve prior to production as well.*

While Lincoln is willing to confirm the look of the upcoming Aviator, they're being hush about details. The fact the preview is powered by a plug-in hybrid that is backed by a twin-turbocharged engine is literally as detailed as they've gotten. The lack of specifics is probably the best indicator that it is a future production-spec powertrain.*

Non-hybrid versions of the Aviator will be rear-wheel drive (yes, you read that correctly). Hybrid versions will come only in all-wheel drive, according to Lincoln.*

So far a detailed launch timeline has not been offered by Lincoln. Word is that the Aviator will arrive sometime next year though.*

I actually really like the wheels. Not sure why they'd "evolve."

I wonder if the AWD will be standard for the Hybrid just because of the amount of torque

    That would be my guess.

Or, it might be a e-AWD, with electric motors powering the front wheels.

I was derided over at GMI for referring to this as a concept.

    The actual quote was:

    "It's a Preview, not a Concept - huge difference."
