2019 Infiniti QX50 Revealed With New Platform, Engine

Infiniti has decided to reveal the 2019 QX50 in advance of its debut slated for next week. All new from the platform up, the QX50 looks very similar to the concept version revealed earlier this year at the Detroit Auto Show.*

It is clear Infiniti has attempted to bulk up the design of this QX50 versus today's swoop-filled design. The 2019 model looks more like an SUV than a car-based crossover, obvious with a more up-right greenhouse and front clip design.*

Despite the new design, the biggest news here is what is under the hood. The 2019 QX50 will offer Infiniti's new variable compression turbocharged 2.0-liter engine. This mill will churn out 268 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque through a CVT automatic. Infiniti says the combination will send the QX50 from zero to 60 mph in just 6.3 seconds in all-wheel-drive format.*

Infiniti's new VC-Turbo engine is the first to have the ability to change its compression ratio on the fly to adapt to performance and efficiency needs.*

“Variable compression ratio technology represents a breakthrough in powertrain development. The QX50, powered by our VC-Turbo, is the first production vehicle ever to give drivers an engine that transforms on demand, setting a new benchmark for powertrain capability and refinement,” stated Randy Parker, Infiniti VP, in a statement.*

Infiniti is expecting the 2019 QX50 to be rated at 27 mpg across the board on front-wheel-drive variants, while the all-wheel-drive model will get a 26/26 mpg rating.*

Expect further details on the new QX50 next week during its reveal at the Los Angeles Auto Show.*

This and Mazda's Skyactiv-X are pretty interesting advancements in traditional ICEs. Both are promising improvements in both efficiency and power density. Very curious to see how both perform in practice.

Now that you say it — looks like a shorter Mazda CX-9 with a slightly different front clip! Now, I can’t unsee it.

    Not to me
besides the deformed front, that rigid "spine" under the side windows is a known NisIfnit malformity
    whereas
Mazda has the seasick-sea-serpent wiggles in their side scoliosis
