Paris Plans to Ban Combustion Engine Vehicles By 2030

Paris city officials have announced plans to ban all gas and diesel vehicles from the city by 2030. The largest city in France has decided it needs to ban pollution-causing vehicles a decade ahead of France's planned ban of 2040.*

The move from Paris City Hall comes as little surprise. The city often has to implement temporary bans on vehicles or have "car free" days in the city to combat particle air pollution. Paris has already implemented a fairly controversial policy of not allowing vehicles older than 20 years old into the city, also a measure to reduce pollution.*

“This is about planning for the long term with a strategy that will reduce greenhouse gases,” said Christophe Najdovski, an official responsible for transport policy at the office of Mayor Anne Hidalgo.

Paris will serve as the host city of the 2024 Olympic Games. Rumors have surfaced in recent months that the city would take measures to ban diesel vehicles prior to the 2024 games. It's also worth noting that Paris served as the host city of the global Paris Climate Accord, a pact to reduce carbon dioxide globally.*

While there are about 32 million vehicles in France, many Parisians do not own a vehicle. City dwellers there rely heavily on public transportation and heavily utilize bike sharing networks and scooters.

At which point do the high price of cars (a lot to do with electrification) become a civil rights issue for poorer people?

And what if ICE powered vehicles, the ones they can afford, are not allowed and they can't get to work?
