BMW Previews i5 With i Vision Dynamics Concept

BMW is planning to add a third model to its i sub-brand and they're previewing it with the i Vision Dynamics Concept shown this week at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The concept is sporting a new design theme for BMW and a fully-electric propulsion system.

A quick look at this concept makes it rather clear BMW has taken a new design path from other recent concepts, such as the Z4 and 8 Series. The i Vision is almost chunky looking in comparison to the other two sleek designs, and it's capped of with a very bizarre new interpretation of the BMW kidney-shaped "grille" design. Since this electric car does not need a grille, designers have swapped it with the ghost of a grille, which now houses sensors for autonomous drive functions.

The grand coupe design is likely a solid preview to the next BMW i model, which is slated to be a sedan has BMW attempts to fill in the middle of its i sub-brand with a volume model. Allegedly the production model of this vehicle will be called i5, slotted comfortably between the i3 and i8.

Like this concept, the production version will likely be fully-electric as well. The i Vision is claiming to have a range of 373 miles with the ability to hit 62 mph in four seconds.

The spiritual production successor of this concept is expected to come to life sometime in 2021.

I hated the X7 but am kind of digging this with the exception of the faux (giant) kidney grills, which don't look right to me. But, I do like what they did with the daylight opening -- brave to try something other than the Hofmeister kink!
