Two sources with knowledge of the plans say that General Motors intends to build and test thousands of self-driving electric vehicles in 2018 as part of its partnership with ride-sharing company Lyft.

Anticipated to be the largest fleet of fully autonomous vehicles deployed by a major manufacturer, the majority of the test cars are believed to be modified versions of the Chevrolet Bolt EV. San Francisco-based Lyft is expected to conduct the testing in several U.S. states.

While GM CEO Mary Barra indicated in mid-December that the company would begin manufacturing a fully autonomous version of the Bolt EV at its Orion Township plant in early 2017, details on the production scale and timing for deployment have remained unknown.

On Friday, GM declined to comment on the report other than to say "our AV technology will appear in an on-demand ride sharing network application sooner than you might think."

GM invested $500 million in Uber-rival Lyft in January and acquired self-driving technology startup Cruise Automation in March of 2016.

One of the autonomous Bolts got into an accident a few days ago in San Francisco. It was not at fault.

I wish I was there to see how law enforcement officers working the accident handled things.
