NHTSA Opens Investigation Into Ford Fusion Steering Wheels Detaching

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened a preliminary investigation into the Ford Fusion. The investigation stems from complaints that suggest the Fusion’s steering wheel could become detached.

NHTSA says it has received three complaints of the steering wheel becoming loose or detached on Fusions from the 2014-2016 models. In one complaint, the steering wheel came completely detached from the steering column as the driver turned into a gas station. Thus far there are no reports of injuries or crashes associated with the alleged matter.

For now NHTSA is just opening a preliminary investigation into the reports, which cover an estimated 841,000 Fusions. A preliminary investigation does not always mean a recall will be issued.
