Fresh Metal: Lincoln Aviator Concept Previews Upcoming SUV

It’s almost like deja vu. Lincoln has a rockstar Navigator right now and is about to roll out an Aviator mini-me. Only this time, the mini-me looks like a potential big-hit.

For now Lincoln is calling this the Aviator Concept, but let’s be honest: this looks very production-ready. In fact, the keen eye will notice that it’s parts-sharing several bits with the Lincoln Continental and Navigator.

It isn’t just sharing parts. The Aviator has the full-on Lincoln family look, borrowed from the Navigator and Continental. It’s a handsome three-row SUV built atop a new rear-wheel drive platform. Yes, rear-wheel drive like the old Aviator.

Lincoln is saying this concept is powered by a twin-turbocharged engine and plug-in hybrid setup, though they aren’t offering details on it at this point.

“We believe Aviator’s elegant design, state-of-the-art technology and refined plug-in hybrid option will draw even more clients to the Lincoln showroom,” said Lincoln president (and Ford marketing chief) Joy Falotico, “including families who are looking for three-row capability.”

A production version of the Lincoln Aviator will go on sale next year. It is unclear at this time if the concept’s hybrid powertrain will be available at launch. Nonetheless, it appears Lincoln has another fantastic SUV coming to join the Navigator.

Not sure if this has been said in other places, but I think this may legitimise the rumor that the next Explorer is going RWD.

I sure hope so. I'm concerned about Lincoln's new brand boss having a background in finance.

We can only hope that Kumar Galhotra helps her along the way.

I'm kind of floored with this thing.

    Lincoln is back.

Holy cow, these are going to sell like hot cakes. Looks like the right product in the right market. And, my guess is that the one-two punch of Navigator and Aviator will very quickly elevate Lincoln’s brand cache. That sets the stage for a better second gen Continental (if it’s coming) and perhaps some more interesting halo vehicles. Well done.
