Lincoln’s surprise reveal for this week’s Los Angeles Auto Show is no longer a surprise. The 2019 Lincoln Nautilus has leaked out ahead of its planned reveal, showcasing a revamped version of the MKX crossover and (obviously) an all-new name.
A quick glance makes it obvious the name is the newest part of this Lincoln. The body panels and rear fascia are nearly identical to today’s MKX, but with a Navigator-inspired front clip design bringing the former MKX into today’s Lincoln design language.
Lincoln has made it clear recently that it is considering ditching its MK naming scheme in favor of real names once again, so this name change is not entirely surprising. What is a bit baffling is that the MKX has been renamed during its 2019 design refresh, but the recently-revealed 2019 MKC is sticking with its three-letter handle.
Ironically, the MKX has been on the market far longer than the MKC, launching in 2007. Its longer tenure on the market would suggest perhaps it has more name recognition and equity to lose by renaming it.
Expect further details on the 2019 Lincoln Nautilus to trickle out shortly.
