Chinese automaker BAIC Motor Corp. has started selling vehicles in Mexico that it imports from its manufacturing facilities in China.

In a recent interview, Vice President Wei Huacheng indicated that the company intends to sell 5,000 of its cars annually by 2018, with a long-term plan of establishing a plant to build gasoline and battery-powered vehicles in Mexico.

BAIC will initially offer a sedan and compact crossover through six dealerships that it has set up in conjunction with automotive distributor Grupo Picacho.

A division of Beijing Automotive Group Co., BAIC is currently the only Chinese automaker with sales operations in Mexico.
